Winter Gardening Cheap
Winter is here but don't fear
I am sure many of you hate when that cold weather comes around and the joy of being outside in the warm sun and seeing the green outside and life flourishing gets a bit upsetting. But don’t fear I have discovered an amazing method that works for me!
I am a broccoli rabe lover and wanted to grow some from seed just as the cold was approaching! Fear not with some sunshine outside, dirt, solo cups, clear bins and water BOOM my winter blues have been answered. Here is what I began around beginning of October. I also did some mustard greens!
Head to your local department store
Purchase a few clear plastic bins with lids (target)
Purchase a package of plastic cups
Purchase a seedling starter tray with holes (amazon)
Get some seedling soil mix (true value)
Get some pots with holes in the bottom (plastic or ceramic anything goes as long as there are holes underneath)
Seeds
I used seeds from a family member
Broccoli rabe seeds are SO tiny
Do your best to put 2 to 3 seeds in each
Use a pencil to make a hole then put seeds in and cover with soil
These germinate FAST within a few days
Growing
Keep seedlings in the MINI GREENHOUSE (aka plastic tote)
Make sure seedlings are getting plenty of water and fertilizer (but not too much)
The sun warms the greenhouse so nicely
Bring plants inside if temperature drops below 32 degrees
Watch the magic happen
