Cedar Mulch for Pests

Cedar Mulch To The Rescue

Ever find yourself dealing with fungus gnats?  Yellow sticky traps work for me for the most part with neem oil spray.  However; cedar mulch is much easier in the long run.  Most pests hate the smell of cedar mulch and get confused with the mulch on top of the soil they love to infest and lay eggs.  I picked up a bag today for $3.49.  I placed about a half inch of cedar mulch around my broccoli rabe and mustard green plants but also around all my house plants.  Smells great and keeping fungus gnats away!

Multiple uses:

Controlling weeds

Retaining moisture

Adding nutrients

I also sprinkled the top layer of soil/mulch with cinnamon.  Cinnamon will prevent any fungi or mold from growing and reproducing if it exists in the soil.  I like to do this because one it smells good and two I don't want to risk any fungi from growing which would attract pests.
